April Updates

This month has been a blast! I’ve been diligently working on a grant project and have accomplished several milestones. First, I completed four tools, four of the “memory apparition” paintings, ordered frames, secured a gallery exhibit, and even gave a presentation to the MSHSL attendees about my grant project.

But that’s not all! I’m thrilled to share that Liberty at Maiden Rock has been sold! She’s in excellent hands, and the new owner has graciously allowed me to exhibit her in New York Mills in late May and June. This juried art show is part of The Great American Think Off, an annual philosophy contest that uses debate as a starting point for written essays. This year’s thought-provoking question is, “Is there only one truth, or are there multiple truths?”

I knew instantly that Liberty would be the perfect fit for this show. And to make it even more special, the theme for the juried art show is a profound quote by Pablo Picasso: “Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth.”

Four essays are selected, each representing a different perspective on the debate. The authors travel to New York Mills, and then the event takes place live where the essays are read aloud. Audience members have the opportunity to participate actively by choosing their favorite after the initial readings and engaging in further discussions of their viewpoints. The event has a rich history and has been recognized nationally over the years.

I also traveled to the Cities and took in some wonderful works at the Minnesota Museum of American Art where it seemed that every turn was a familiar name of an artist I’ve met or know.

I love this photo. I ended up talking with J who is a volunteer at the musuem and quite knowledgable about the work there. Later, I found out he is also an artist, but his career was a physicist.
This was such a great spot for a Judy Onofrio work!
I’ve never seen paint this thick..done by Joan Brown.
Works by Jim Denomie and Rabbet Before Horses Strickland
I first saw this at the Nemeth Art Center where I met the artist, Julie Buffalohead.
I want to go back and look at these works by Miriam Shapiro!
